What do I mean “the kind of successful copywriter…”
To explain, let me first backtrack and note how amazed I am by all the copywriting courses started in the last few years by people with maybe a couple of years of experience, purporting to teach you how to succeed as a copywriter.
There are a few courses taught by copy pros, but often they
are writers with a particular perspective – usually writers who come from a
mail order background. Naturally they teach the tactics and the tone that apply
to that experience.
Well, that may or may not be right for the kind of copywriting career you want. For instance, if you're looking for corporate clients, and show samples of “cash-sucking” sales pages, with long, chest-beating headlines, you'll be laughed out of the office (or never hear back).
Often these teachers trot out a legend like Gene Schwartz and
tell you to model him. Well, Schwartz was great, but he wrote for a specific
niche - self improvement/print ad/mail order market. The style translates well
into some fields, but poorly in others.
Practical Coaching for Succeeding Today
What I do is different. I don't start with formulas. I start with niches. What copywriting niche or niches do you want to succeed at? It's the best way to make it today. Try to get a high paying gig writing copy for a big financial client or newsletter, without any demonstrable experience, expertise or samples in financial services…. not gonna happen.
Same with direct mail, or technology or healthcare, or just about any field you can mention. They want to know you grasp the tone, the language, the feel, of their audience.
Can you just go ahead and write some sales letter for an internet buddy? Claim that as your portfolio. You can. But it won't get you far. Theer is a better roadmap for succeeding today. And I'll show it to you.
